Today, we aren’t talking about the ceramics themselves, but focusing on a vital component for toilet seat functionality: the hinge. We will explore how, in certain models, the hinge has evolved beyond a simple mechanical part to become a defining feature of the design.
Diagonal Series – The Unique Single Hinge
Let’s start with the star of our cover: DIAGONAL by Ideal Standard. This seat is unique because it operates with a single central hinge rather than the traditional left/right pair. It is an imposing product, a testament to “Made in Italy” craftsmanship. Such a distinctive seat could only be paired with a toilet of equal formal importance—a massive unit with a seat measuring a full 50 cm in length.
In the Sintebagno.shop store we have created a section dedicated to the DIAGONAL toilet seat cover where you will find not only the complete toilet seat, but also the single hinge and its original bumpers. All this can be found at the following link [ clik HERE ]
Cesame Ceramics – The “American Style” Pipe Hinge
While CESAME might not have invented the pipe hinge (also known as “American style”), they certainly made it iconic. The metal pipe connecting the two hinges isn’t just aesthetic; it stabilizes the seat on the bowl, providing a rock-solid feel while sitting. Furthermore, it reduces vibrations during opening and closing, significantly extending the product’s lifespan—sometimes up to 20 years! This feature was standard on legendary series like ARETUSA, SINTESI, DECO’, SYMBOL and SYSTEM.
You can learn more about this type of hinge and see it well in the video we made for one of Cesame’s sanitary fixtures: Bella Epoque.
In the store Sintesibagno you will find all original Cesame toilet seat covers, all with the tube hinge (I forgot, someone calls it American-style) at the following link [ clik HERE ]
Calla Series – Luxury in the Details
Calla is the “classic-luxury” masterpiece by Ideal Standard. To match its prestige, a bespoke hinge was designed with a heavy-duty chrome pipe. Compared to standard versions, this pipe has double the diameter, and the hinge arms end in distinctive triangular plates with three fixing holes. It is an unmistakable “fingerprint” of beauty that embellishes the entire ceramic line.
The fingerprint of beauty is left all over this series of sanitary ware by Ideal Standard. In the Sintesibagno store you will find a section dedicated to the Calla world where, in addition to the WC covers (not only the original model is available, but also replicas that are still perfect but less expensive) at the following link [ clik HERE ]
You&Me Series – Engineering for Small Spaces
The You&Me series by Hatria is a functional icon for small bathrooms. However, its narrow fixing centers (interaxis) originally created a structural weakness. To solve this, we developed a custom-engineered hinge for our polyester-coated wood seats. By anchoring the arms to a rectangular metal bar, we redistributed the mechanical stress onto the metal rather than the wood. The result? A seat that our customers claim lasts “forever.”
