Our journey through the history of bathroom design continues. We are exploring those ceramic series that left a significant mark, either through commercial success (generating high volumes and resources for manufacturers) or through formal innovation (becoming style icons and elevating the brand’s prestige).
After covering classics like CONCA by Ideal Standard, LINK by Ceramica Flaminia , LFT Spazio by Simas, SINTESI by Cesame, ANTICA by Vincenti in our previous posts, today we focus on the “vintage” icons: the series that dominated Italian bathrooms during the 1970s and 1980s.
SPAZIO Series – Ceramica Scala

In its later years, SCALA was known for essential, practical lines (like IRIL or GEMMA). Spazio was the bold exception. Launched between the ’60s and ’70s, it surprised the market with its avant-garde silhouette.
- The Detail: Originally paired with a unique “half-moon” toilet seat (by Friges) that concealed the hinges, blending perfectly into the back of the bowl.
- Dimensions: This is a “Large” model, measuring nearly 50 cm in length.
- The Solution: While the original 3-piece seat is no longer in production, we have selected a version that fits the curves and length perfectly.
- The 3-piece toilet seat with the half-moon is unfortunately no longer available, however, we have selected a version (you will see the rear hinges) that is perfect in length and curves that you will find at the following Sintesibagno store link [ clik HERE ]
83 Series – Ceramica Astra (Design by F. Valeri)

Thanks to designer F. Valeri, Astra Ceramica was a pioneer in bringing formal rigor to the industry. The 83 Series anticipated the “Big” sanitaryware trend by decades.
- Design: A large, clean D-shape. Despite its impressive length (48/49 cm with hinges), it maintains a slender look with a width of only 35 cm.
- The toilet seat for these Astra sanitary ware in the official colours can be found in the Sintesibagno store at the following link [ clik HERE ]
MEDITERRANEA Series – Vavid

VAVID produced several best-sellers, but Mediterranea was a true game-changer. It introduced a rectangular shape with a functional twist: a raised rear edge (the “step”).
- The Innovation: This design prevented dirt from accumulating behind the toilet, making floor cleaning much easier—a concept later adopted by brands like Catalano, Cesame, and Pozzi Ginori.
