In the history of bathroom design, several ceramic series have achieved staggering sales figures. These successes were well-deserved, thanks to their stylistic beauty. However, even a “perfect” product eventually becomes dated as trends and public tastes shift. We see this in every industry—fashion, furniture, electronics, and even automotive (think of how many generations the VW Golf has seen).
The bathroom world is no different. Many iconic ceramic series and their matching toilet seats have undergone significant stylistic evolutions. Today, we explore some of the most famous series and how their seats transformed alongside them.
Catalano Ceramics: SFERA Old vs. New

Launched in the 1990s, the Sfera series was a cornerstone of Catalano’s global success.
The Original (Old): This version set the trend for modern sanitary ware. It features a D-shape with a slight crescent curve at the back. Its toilet seat has specific, compact dimensions and a standard hinge distance of 15/16 cm.
The Restyling (New): In the early 2000s, Catalano introduced the “Sfera System.” The bowl became “flush-to-wall” (back-to-wall) with sleek, wrap-around lines. While it kept the D-shape, the rear corners became sharp 90° angles. Crucially, the fixing width (distance between holes) increased to 22 cm.

Dolomite Ceramics: PERLA Classic vs. PERLA New

A true “best-seller,” Perla is a leader in the “narrow” category (under 35 cm wide).
Perla Classic: Known for its regular oval shape and perceived sturdiness, it remained on the catalog for years as “Perla Classic” even after the update.
Perla New: The redesign transformed the upper rim. The regular oval was replaced by a nearly triangular shape, widening the seat from 34.5 cm to 36 cm.

Pozzi Ginori: FANTASIA vs. FANTASIA 2
In the 90s, Pozzi Ginori dominated the real estate market with the Fantasia series.

Fantasia (First Edition): Highly rounded with a distinctive, slight forward lean in its silhouette.

Fantasia 2: This was a radical restyling by Pozzi Ginori (now Geberit). The bowl shifted from a perfect oval to a rectangular shape. Despite the shared name, the two versions require completely different seats.
