ICONS Sanitary Fixture (Part 3). Which sanitary ware and their toilet seats have been the most imitated?

We have started discussing this type of sanitary fixture in some previous posts. We explained that we consider fixtures worthy of this category to be those that have introduced such significant novelties into the bathroom furnishing world that they were subsequently followed and imitated by all other ceramic companies.

Some examples we want to recall from the post ”Legendary sanitaryware. They create shapes, styles and colours then sought after by all. Let’s find the right toilet seat for these iconic toilets (part 1)” are: Series ALA Ideal Standard – the suspended series, Series SQUARE Pozzi Ginori – the champagne colour, Series FROZEN Simas

From the post “Iconic sanitary ware: shapes, styles and colours ‘copied’ from the competitors. Looking for the toilet seat cover (part 2)” are: Series CLODIA Dolomite – the top step/stairs, Series ITALICA Pozzi Ginori – the big size, Series YOU&ME Hatria – the perfect (round) circle and the Cesame colours of its sanitary ware.

Ideal Standard CONCA Series – The Raised Back Part

Let’s talk about perhaps the best-selling toilet of all time: the Conca by Ideal Standard. Its shape has so many innovative features that we were unsure which one to choose to include it in the ICONS category. We chose the particular raised back section which revolutionized the classic flat rim of all sanitary fixtures that came before this ceramic series. An unmistakable aesthetic and hygienic detail.

We explained the inclined plane in the back part of the toilet in the post: “Sanitary wares with raised top. WC covers with 45° fixing hinges (part 1)”. If you look closely at the images, you will notice that the holes where the toilet seat will be fixed are not on flat parts of the fixture, but rather on the curve of the raised section. This is why the hinges (the metal parts) must have an inclination that allows them to be positioned correctly, precisely at 45∘. If you watch the videos on our channel about these toilet seats [ clik HERE ], you will see very well how the inclined hinge is made.

Naturally, all Conca toilet seats in all materials and colors: Eu white, Ideal Standard white, champagne, mink, cashmere, beaver, walnut, whispered blue, deep blue, cranberry, whispered green, fern green, whispered grey, pomegranate, cactus, black, Manchu yellow, dune yellow, can be found in the Sintesibagno store at the following link [ clik HERE ].

Flaminia LINK Series – The Modern Wall-Hung Toilet (Hidden Fixings)

We have seen that the widespread adoption of wall-hung fixtures in bathrooms is thanks to Ideal Standard’s ALA (see post: ”Wall-hung sanitary ware and their covers (part 1)“). Once the market accepted the idea of wall-hung, there was an evolution of the fixtures in terms of form. Functionality was no longer enough; design shapes were sought.

If you look closely, beyond the minimalist aesthetic, you will notice that the lateral fixing holes, once present in wall-hung toilets, have disappeared. Ceramica Flaminia’s LINK series is undoubtedly at the forefront of this formal revolution (see post: ”Modern wall-hung toilets. Fixings are concealed and top-mounted toilet seats are required.(part 2)” ).

To understand the innovative scope of the style of this ceramic series, designed by Cappellini and Palomba, in the bathroom world, we suggest the post: ”The FLAMINIA design series. Not just WCs and bidets, but LINK, SPIN, TERRA…. and their original toilet seats.” where we discuss it extensively along with the other two Flaminia series of the period: TERRA and SPIN. Toilet seats for these Link fixtures are available in all their variants (original wrap-around, original soft-close wrap-around, in wood covered with polyester, and the various dedicated versions) in the Sintesibagno store at the following link [ clik HERE ].

AXA ONE Uno Ceramica Series – The Out-of-Measure Toilet Seat Inter-axis

Even non-experts know that the inter-axis distance in sanitary fixtures (the two holes in the fixture where the toilet seat anchor pins are inserted) is normally, and most of the time, a measurement between 14 and 16 cm. Starting in the early 2000s, with the market presentation of many ceramic series called “designer,” particular and very wide inter-axes began to appear. In our opinion, this was and is an extreme formal choice, aimed at leaving the rear surface of the toilet as clear as possible. Details that, however, enhance the modern lines of the sanitary fixtures.

As a symbol of this category, we have chosen Axa One by Uno Ceramiche. A fixture with a modern and refined shape; its toilet seat has a non-standard inter-axis measurement of 24.5/25 cm. Both the highly sought-after original version and the dedicated version are available at the following link [ clik HERE ].

Pozzi Ginori EASY.02 Series – The Skirted Toilet

If we elected LINK as the symbol of modern wall-hung fixtures, we choose Easy by Pozzi Ginori (Design Antonio Citterio) as the symbol of the new floor-standing, back-to-wall skirted fixtures, which we looked at closely in the post: ”The streamlined floor-standing sanitary ware (flush with the wall). Soft, wrap-around shapes. Top-mounted toilet seats are required.(expa)” where we take a passage to describe them:

They are considered the modern shapes of sanitary fixtures in the bathroom furnishing world. They are practically the next step after wall-hung fixtures, always chosen for hygienic reasons (ease of cleaning) and aesthetic reasons (an icon of modernity in the bathroom since the ’90s). With these shapes, which we will briefly explain why they are called skirted, ceramic companies have revolutionized their catalogs. In practice, this type of fixture, besides being aesthetically very beautiful, is also very practical because the body of the fixture has been brought to rest completely against the back wall, with the consequence that there will no longer be gaps between the inner and outer part of the fixture, both on the floor and on the wall (hence why they are called skirted or back-to-wall).

The Easy series was one of the first to have these characteristics, and, very importantly, it was a best-seller for several years in the bathroom furnishing market. All toilet seats for this series are available in the Sintesibagno store at the following link [ clik HERE ], including a version in polyester-coated white wood for those looking for a seat that might be less aesthetically pleasing than the original rounded plastic one but more practical due to being completely flat.

Bonsai Series – The Small Shape

All sanitary companies have tackled the small shape of fixtures. These are all toilets and bidets with a maximum depth of 50 cm. In the post: ”Sintesibagno® selects from its toilet seat catalogue the ten SMALL SANITARIES that have made history in the category” we saw the category best-sellers: 500 by Pozzi, ZERO 45 by Catalano, SMALL by Ideal Standard, YOU&ME by Hatria, COMPACT by Eos Ceramica, ZEROLIGHT by Catalano and F-CONCEPT by Faleri.

We have decided to give the role of icons to this sanitary fixture by Ceramica Globo because it is, in our opinion, the most essential shape (both in the base and in the upper part). The one most suited with its slender figure to convey the idea of “small.” You can find the toilet seat for this small fixture in the Sintesibagno store at the following link [ clik HERE ].

Montebianco Series – The Antiqued Shape and Style

In a few years (2025), this legendary sanitary fixture series will celebrate 100 years! Perhaps the most imitated sanitary fixture in the entire bathroom furnishing world, see post: ”And then comes ‘Montebianco’ Classic/antique sanitary ware and their toilet seats (part 2)”. Montebianco fixtures were designed by Guido Andlovitz and presented by Richard Ginori as early as 1925. Despite a series of restylings, they have survived to the present day and are still featured in the current Pozzi Ginori catalog. As the catalog itself states: “A timeless success. Montebianco is the historic bathroom line that maintains its relevance over time. A classic of the modern.” Its round top shape and the parallelepiped body that widens toward the floor make it unmistakable. Its toilet seat also has an unmistakable shape and can be found in the Sintesibagno store at the following link [ clik HERE ].

Today we have seen other ceramic series and their colors that are very important for the entire world of bathroom furniture. Perhaps you have recognized your toilet and are able to purchase the correct and precise toilet seat for your WC without making a mistake. However, if you still have doubts about which toilet seat to look for for the toilet you have in your bathroom, we suggest you send us an email to info@sintesibagno.it or a WhatsApp message to the number +39 3341288978 with two images of your sanitary fixture and a few measurements, and we will be able to help you with your choice.
