Modern Back-to-Wall Toilets: The Next Evolution in Bathroom Design

Back-to-wall toilets are the next step in the evolution of modern bathroom fixtures. They build on the success of wall-hung toilets, which have been a top choice since the 1990s for both their hygienic benefits (easy cleaning) and their sleek, modern aesthetic. With the introduction of these new “shrouded” or “back-to-wall” designs, ceramic manufacturers have completely revolutionized their product lines.

This type of toilet is not only aesthetically beautiful but also incredibly practical. The body of the toilet is designed to sit completely flush against the back wall, eliminating any gaps between the toilet and the wall or floor. This is why they are called “shrouded” or “back-to-wall” (literally “flush against the wall”). This design has two major benefits:

  1. Improved Hygiene: There’s no space for dirt or grime to collect under or behind the toilet, making it much easier to keep clean.
  2. Specialized Toilet Seats: All of these back-to-wall toilets require toilet seats that can be installed and removed from the top, using a special expansion or anchor fitting. This is crucial because it would be absurd to have to uninstall the entire toilet just to replace the seat, wasting time and money and requiring a professional plumber.

Some of these back-to-wall models have been featured in our previous posts: “The latest series of Ceramica Dolomite and their toilet seats (part 4)” we have seen GEMMA 2 e ASOLO, in the post: ”Hidra Ceramiche. Top-Fixing Toilet Seat Hinges: Expansion vs. Anchor Systems

Now let’s look at the different types of hinges available for installing a toilet seat. Originally, only bottom-fixing hinges (see Photo 1b) were available. These were used with freestanding floor-mounted toilets, which provided easy access to the back to tighten the nut or wingnut.

With the introduction of the first wall-hung toilets, which often had very little or no side access due to the mounting bolts, a new top-fixing system was introduced. This was called the expansion fixing (see Photo 1a). Just like a wall anchor, you insert the expansion kit into the toilet’s mounting hole, and then use a screwdriver to tighten it, causing it to expand and secure the seat from the top.

This simple innovation was a game-changer for the bathroom industry and specifically made it possible for back-to-wall toilets to become a reality. Without the ability to fix the seat from the top, every time a toilet seat needed to be replaced, the entire toilet would have to be uninstalled—an absurd and impractical task.

Another top-fixing system, the anchor fixing (see Photo 1c), is a significant improvement over the expansion type. While the expansion system can sometimes be difficult to tighten (if the hole is too large) or can loosen over time, the new anchor system is incredibly efficient and stable.

The anchor system also works from the top. A diamond-shaped metal piece is inserted vertically into the toilet’s mounting hole. Once it passes through the ceramic, it pivots horizontally. By holding the screw and rotating it, the anchor firmly locks the toilet seat in place. This provides a stable and long-lasting connection. This system works for most toilets with a through-hole, but not for those with a blind hole.

Our Bestselling Back-to-Wall Toilets and Their Seats

Here are some of the most popular and influential back-to-wall toilet series that have been bestsellers in the industry:

Sfera (System C) by Catalano

This series perfectly represents the back-to-wall category and has been a source of inspiration for many competitors. With its soft, flowing lines, the Sfera series defined the early 2000s and remains a popular choice for those seeking a modern look. All Sfera toilet seats—including the classic wrap-around covers, the new slim versions, and both standard and soft-close hinges—are available in the Sintesibagno store at the following link [ clik HERE ]

Open Space by Ceramica Globo

For a long time, this was the main competitor to the Sfera series. It’s produced in two depths, with the 57cm version being the most distinctive. Unlike the 49cm version, which has a softer, rounded shape similar to the Sfera, the larger model has a unique diagonal line that runs along the bottom and top of the toilet, making it instantly recognizable. All toilet seats for this series are available in the Sintesibagno store at the following link [ clik HERE ]

Fast by Pozzi Ginori (Geberit)

Along with other modern series like FANTASIA 2, METRICA, CITTERIO and ACANTO, the Fast series was part of a major relaunch for the company, now part of the Geberit Group. These are all back-to-wall models that require top-fixing toilet seats. The Fast series is also available with Rimfree technology, an innovative rimless flush system that makes cleaning the inside of the bowl much easier. You can find all the toilet seats for this series in the Sintesibagno store at the following link [ clik HERE ].

LFT Spazio (Acqua Space) by Simas

According to Simas’s official website (SIMAS), this series is “a project that is a friend. A collection that is essential in its clean form, in the name of a new concept of geometry that pushes into the super-oval. Adaptable to modern and architectural spaces and to the most intimate and daily bathroom. It wears the simplicity of its lines lightly, in a young and versatile answer, accessible to all.” This “super-oval” has a unique, unmistakable shape that tends toward a triangle when viewed from above. All toilet seats for this series, including the original wooden version, are available in the Sintesibagno store at the following link [ clik HERE ].
